Darebin Council, Creative Culture Department leads in arts participation practice in local government, in particular by engaging with older people. Following on from the success of the pilot project Museum of Me in 2014 Council aims to advance to a second phase of the project – two discrete artist residencies’ based in aged care facilities.

We are looking for experienced artists/practitioners, for two 11 week residencies based in two Darebin aged care facilities. These two residencies are appropriate for artists working in film, visual arts, writers, performing artists, musicians, ephemeral artists and sculptors. Artists with experience in durational work/participatory arts projects, who want the opportunity to be challenged in this rewarding environment, are encouraged to apply. Most importantly we are looking to engage artists of high calibre with a track record of delivery of contemporary arts projects and an ability to adapt/advance their practice to the aged care setting.

Using a collaborative approach the artist will engage participants in both hands on and soft engagement appropriate to the residents, facility and the art work explored.

A feature of the project is the involvement of school children from a local primary school. The children will visit the aged care facility once per week (for 8 weeks) with the aim of developing relationships with older residents through arts activities, led by the resident artist. It is anticipated that the involvement of children will influence, aide or form part of the final work.

Project duration:   11 weeks   April – June 2016

The fee is $80 per hour for ten hours per week. Materials budget will be offered separate to the residency fee.
